Playbooks for movers

SEO, short for search engine optimization, means making it easy for Google to understand your business and confident enough to show it to people nearby. For a moving company it comes down to one question: when someone in the towns you serve searches for movers, do they find you?

You do not need to learn code or chase tricks. Local SEO for movers is mostly a set of basics, done properly and kept up every week. This guide explains how Google picks which movers to show, what your website and Google profile need, how to build town pages without getting into trouble and which common mistakes to avoid. If a term is new to you, our glossary explains it in plain words.

How does Google decide which movers to show?

Search “movers near me” and Google shows two different kinds of results. Near the top is a map with a short list of businesses, often called the map pack. Below it is the regular list of websites. You can appear in both, and they work a little differently.

  • The map results come mostly from your Google Business Profile: your category, service areas, reviews, photos and how active the profile is.
  • The website results come from your site: its pages, how clearly they match the search, how fast and useful they are and how many other sites link to it.

Google says local results are based mainly on three things. Relevance is how well your business matches the search. Distance is how close you are to the searcher or to the place named in the search. Prominence is how well known you are, which includes your reviews and the links to your website. You cannot change distance. You can work on the other two every week.

The short version

Be the clearest, most active and most trusted mover for each town you serve. Everything else in this guide is a way of doing that.

What does a moving company website need to rank?

Your website is the part of SEO you fully own. These are the things that matter most for movers.

People search for “local movers in [town]”, “apartment movers”, “piano movers” and “long distance movers from [city]”. Give each main service and each main town its own page, so Google has one clear page to show for each kind of search.

2. Clear page titles and headings

The page title, the blue link in search results, and the main heading on the page should say what the page is about in plain words, such as “Local Movers in [Town] | [Your Company]”. Write for people first. Repeating the same keyword over and over does not help.

3. Fast and easy on a phone

Most people look for movers on their phones. Pages should load quickly, text should be readable without zooming and the call button and quote form should be easy to tap with a thumb.

4. Real, useful content

Explain how your pricing works, what is included, which areas you cover and what to expect on moving day. Show real photos of your crew and trucks. Content that answers real questions helps customers decide and helps Google understand what you do.

5. The same business details everywhere

Your business name, phone number and address or service area should match exactly on your website, your Google profile and the directories you are listed in. Mixed details confuse both Google and customers.

6. Business details Google can read

Search engines also read a small block of behind-the-scenes code, called structured data or schema, that lists your business name, phone number, service area and hours. It does not replace good pages, but it helps Google connect your site with your profile. Make sure it matches your real details. Every LeadKeet moving company website is built with these basics from day one.

How do you build town pages that rank without getting penalized?

Town pages, sometimes called location pages or service area pages, are one page for each town you serve. Done well, they are one of the best ways for a mover to show up beyond its home town. Done badly, they can drag down the whole site.

Google’s spam policies warn against doorway pages, which are pages created to rank for many similar searches, and against scaled content, which means lots of pages made mainly to manipulate rankings instead of helping people. Three hundred pages that only swap the town name are exactly what those rules describe.

  1. List the towns you really serve, in order of how much work you want there. Start with five to ten.
  2. Write each page for someone moving in that town. Mention the neighborhoods, building types and access issues your crew actually deals with there, like walk-up apartments, steep driveways or tight downtown parking.
  3. Add proof from that town. Reviews from customers there, photos from jobs there and the kinds of moves you do most there.
  4. Explain pricing for that area, including any travel fee, and put the quote form near the top of the page.
  5. Link the town pages together from a service area page and from your home page, so customers and Google can find them all.
  6. Add towns slowly. A few good new pages a month beats a hundred thin ones published at once.

Fewer, better pages

Ten real town pages beat three hundred copies. If you could swap in another town’s name and the page would still make sense, it needs more local detail.

How do you get into the Google map results?

The map pack is where a lot of moving jobs start, especially on phones. Your Google Business Profile is the main lever, and it rewards accuracy and activity.

  • Use your real business name. Google’s guidelines say not to add keywords or locations to it, and breaking that rule can get a profile suspended.
  • Pick the most accurate primary category and add secondary categories only for services you really offer.
  • Set up as a service-area business if customers do not visit you, and hide your street address. Google allows up to 20 service areas and says your overall area should not stretch much beyond about two hours of driving from your base.
  • Keep reviews coming in and reply to them. Review count and rating are part of prominence.
  • Add real photos and posts regularly, and keep your hours and services up to date.

Posts and photos do not need to be fancy. A photo of a wrapped piano with a one-line caption about the job is exactly the kind of fresh, real content that shows the profile is looked after.

We cover all of this step by step in Google Business Profile and reviews for movers, including how to ask for reviews without breaking Google’s rules.

Yes, but quality beats quantity. A backlink is simply a link from another website to yours. Links from real local businesses and organizations tell Google you are an established part of the community.

  • Partners: real estate agents, property managers, storage facilities and senior living communities that recommend you on their sites.
  • Community: your chamber of commerce, local business groups, charity drives or a youth sports team you sponsor.
  • Local news and blogs: a story about a donation drive, a big community move or a helpful moving checklist.
  • Associations: state or local moving and business associations that list their members.

8. Directory listings

Listings on the main directories, such as Yelp, the BBB, Facebook and Nextdoor, help customers find you and confirm your details. Make sure the name, phone number and area match everywhere. You do not need hundreds of them. A dozen accurate ones are plenty.

Do not buy links, join link swap schemes or pay for packages of hundreds of directory listings. At best they do nothing. At worst Google treats them as spam and your rankings suffer.

How long does moving company SEO take, and how do you measure it?

Google profile fixes and new reviews can help within weeks. Website pages and town pages usually take a few months to settle into rankings, and longer in big cities with many movers. SEO is slow to start and slow to stop, which is exactly what makes it valuable once it works.

Measure results in booked jobs, not in rankings alone. Rankings shift by location and device, so a screenshot from your own phone in your own office does not tell you much.

  • Google Search Console is free and shows which searches your site appears for and how many people click.
  • Your Google Business Profile performance shows calls, website clicks and direction requests that came from your profile.
  • Lead source tracking tells you how many quote requests and calls came from Google, and how many of them booked.
  • A monthly checkup of your site’s speed and basics. The free website checker does it in about a minute.

Ranking is only worth something if the leads it brings get answered. Our guide to moving leads covers what happens after the click.

What SEO mistakes should moving companies avoid?

Most SEO damage comes from shortcuts that looked clever at the time. Here is how the common approach compares with doing it properly.

TopicThe usual wayLeadKeet
Business nameKeywords and towns stuffed into the Google profile nameYour real name, exactly as it appears on your trucks
Town pagesHundreds of copy-paste pagesA real page for each town you serve, with local proof
Switching websitesOld pages deleted and rankings lostSame page addresses or proper redirects, so rankings carry over
Google profileSet up once and forgottenPosts, photos and review replies every week
ReportingA ranking report nobody readsLeads and booked jobs, every week
  • Fake addresses. Using a virtual office or mailbox to appear in another town breaks Google’s guidelines and can get your profile removed.
  • Ranking guarantees. Nobody controls Google’s results. Anyone who guarantees a top spot is guessing or using tricks that will catch up with you.
  • Long contracts. SEO takes time, but you should still be able to walk away if you see no progress after a few months.
  • Switching websites carelessly. Deleting old pages or changing their addresses without redirects can throw away years of rankings overnight. Save a list of every old page before you switch.
  • Ignoring speed and phones. A beautiful site that takes ages to load on a phone loses visitors before they ever see your prices.

Questions, answered

Can I do SEO for my moving company myself?

Yes. The basics are a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews, a fast website with a page for each main service and town, and consistent business details everywhere. The hard part is keeping it up every week during busy season.

How long does SEO take for a moving company?

Google profile improvements and new reviews can help within a few weeks. New website pages usually take a few months to rank, and longer in large cities with many movers.

Do I need a separate page for every town I serve?

A page for each main town you serve helps, as long as each one is genuinely useful and local. Copy-paste pages that only swap the town name can hurt your whole site.

Can I rank in a town where I do not have an office?

In the regular website results, yes, with a strong town page and local proof. In the map results it is harder, because distance matters, and using a fake address there breaks Google’s guidelines.

Does social media help my Google rankings?

Not directly, but it helps in other ways. Active social pages lead to more searches for your business name, more visits to your site and more reviews, and posts on your Google profile keep it fresh.

What is the most important SEO task for a small moving company?

Getting a steady flow of genuine Google reviews and replying to every one. Reviews help you show up in the map results and help you get chosen once you do.

Should I pay someone to do my moving company SEO?

Only if they are clear about what they do each month, report on leads and booked jobs and let you leave without a long contract. Be wary of anyone who guarantees rankings.
